Scott and myself went for a trip out to Healsville last weekend, here are some photos I took from the White Rabbit Brewery. Some really amazing hand drawn typography in that place, highly recommend dropping in for a beer if you're ever that way.

Best Guacamole

Just incase you need one, this is the BEST and easiest guacamole EVER, guarantee it, enjoy!

2 Avocados
Half a Red Onion, finely chopped
2 Tbsp's of Light Sour Cream
1 Tbsp of Lemon Juice
1 Tbsp of Sweet Chilli Sauce

Smash avocado into a bowl. Add in lemon juice, sour cream, chilli sauce and red onion and mix well.
(If it's your preference, add some fresh coriander.)

Vietnamese Pho

This is a photo of the Vietnamese Pho I made the other night, first attempt and I was pretty damn happy with it! As was Scott. Recipe orginally from taste.com.au - but here it is again.

1 litre salt-reduced chicken stock (I used Massel Chicken Stock which is Vegan Friendly)
3cm piece fresh ginger, peeled
2 star anise
1 tablespoon fish sauce
2 teaspoons soy sauce
100g rice-stick (pad Thai) noodles
2 tablespoons lime juice
300g firm tofu, cut into 3cm cubes
1 cup fresh coriander leaves
1 cup beansprouts, trimmed
2 small red chillies, thinly sliced
3 green onions, thinly sliced (I didn't have any of these so I used fried onion, found in the asian aisle of woolies)
Lime wedges, to serve
3 Baby Bok Choy, quartered lengthways

Place stock, ginger, star anise, fish sauce, soy sauce and 2 cups cold water in a large saucepan over high heat. Cover. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer for 5 minutes. In the last minute add your Bok Choy, and remove once wilted and cooked.

Meanwhile, place noodles in a heatproof bowl. Cover with boiling water. Stand for 5 to 8 minutes or until tender. Separate with a fork. Drain.

Using a slotted spoon, remove ginger and star anise from stock mixture. Add tofu. Stir in lime juice. Divide noodles, Bok Choy and stock mixture between bowls. Top with coriander, beansprouts, chilli and onion (or fried onion). Serve with lime wedges.

Octopus's Garden

I've just recently completed an Illustration based around the beatles song 'Octopus's Garden', was quite a process. First I drew the octopus by hand, took it into illustrator and created the inverse, then worked over the top with tracing paper to draw in each individual shape by pencil, then again with pen. I was hoping by using pen it would be high enough quality to live trace, but wasn't working that great so eventually I decided to go back in and re-draw the entire thing in Illustrator with the pen tool. Hopefully was worth all the effort! And my stock images I took at the Melbourne Aquarium finally came in use as each of the fish included are based on actual fish. Let me know your thoughts!

Had to make a letterhead recently, and wanted to make a more stationary friendly mark working with my web and blog banner. Printed the logo on black and then used sticky tape to scratch and mark, before re-scanning and working on in illustrator.

The Love is Here

Doing an illustration at the moment for a competition called 'The Love is Here Book Launch and Exhition' which gets you placed in an exhibition and an A5 book. Has to be black and white, has to be landscape, and also needs to say I love you somewhere on the artwork. Started with an idea actually from Scott who saw a photo of two people with their heads together forming a love heart. I've tried to re-create it in the illustration using their fringes, but also the complete outline of the drawing. Not sure where I'm going with it at the moment, what are your thoughts? Comments please!

My partner and I recently went to Kingscliff for a weeks holiday to get some sun before the Melbourne winter started to kick in, managed just to get a couple iPhone photos around there and Byron Bay. Really looking forward to getting an iPhone 4 as the 3G camera is really poor quality, although it does add a nice feel to the images. So it has been a while since my last post - have definitely been neglecting my poor blog! Although I have been neglecting it for positive reasons as I started a full time job where I've been for 5 months now. My new role, (Graphic Designer for Linen House) has been fantastic but, doing a lot of packaging and a tonne of photography corrections which are some great skills to freshen up on. Luckily working with a really great team of people which always makes any job so much more fun. Over Christmas break (sadly only 12 days long) I'll endeavour to get my sites more updated, and slowly get together a re-design for my portfolio site with hopefully a new logo! (Time permitting of course) Until then, Happy New Year!

I previously had a blog through wordpress, but I've decided to start one in blogger instead purely because I found a layout that I preferred to work with. For some background my name is Amanda and I am a graphic designer based in Newcastle, Australia. Will sooner rather than later be making the move to Melbourne however. I did a Bachelors Degree in Vis Comm at the University of Newcastle, worked for 12 months as a marketing & advertising co-ordinator for a national retail company, and now I'm back at Uni doing my Honours in Vis Comm focusing on typography. This blog will mainly focus on Design and Design Events, also lots of nerdy things about type and magazines, as this is what I love. Feel free to send me an email!
